Shipping Company WEGENER - Shipping history in six generation

The family Wegener can look back on a long seafaring tradition in a region of „Altes Land“ south of Hamburg that stretches back more than twohundred years. In 1786 Johann Wegener was the first mentioned mariner in the church register in Estebrügge. Today, the family looks back on several generations of Captains, Engineers and Naval Architects and have grown from coastal mariners to a modern shipping company.

Captain Hans-Peter Wegener accelerated the development and built twelve vessels at the J.J. Sietas shipyard in Hamburg between 1960 and 2006.

Of decisive importance for the development of shipping company H.-P. WEGENER was the cooperation with the finnish shipping liner CONTAINERSHIPS Ltd. OY. Between 1989 and 2006, a total of five 500 to 1,000 TEU container vessels with high ice class and other special requirements were developed and commissioned at the shipyard J.J. SIETAS for its services between England, the Netherlands, Finland, Russia and the Baltic States.

Simultaneously with the founding of the WEGENER Bereederungsges. mbH & Co. KG laid the foundation stone for further development in 2000. Today, the shipping company is run in the sixth generation by Naval Architect Ulrike Wegener and her husband. It is largely due to them that the fleet has been largely unscathed during the recent shipping crisis. After the sister ship of the existing fleet MV “NOVA” was purchased second hand in 2022, the environmentally friendly newbuildings MV “HERA” and MV “LUNA” are to begin the further rejuvenation of the fleet from 2025.
